Oil on canvas painting depicting large orange and yellow sun with rays and dramatic clouds

George Frederic Watts, After the Deluge, 1885-1886, oil on canvas

Watts Gallery Trust
The Bible tells the story of a terrible flood – also called the Deluge – that wiped out all life on earth except for those saved by Noah in his ark. After the Deluge shows the sun’s return after the forty days of rain that led to the flood.

In this painting, George Frederic Watts does not include the traditional symbols of the scene such as the ark, the dove, or a rainbow. Instead, he focuses on the burning sun rising above the glittering blue waters.
